I was struck by this “clean time calculator” on the site of Clean and Sober, an addictions treatment program for the homeless: http://clean-and-sober.org/ It’s on the right side of the page and helps track how many days, hours, minutes and seconds clean someone is.
With all of our struggles, we really are dealing with “one day at a time,” one hour at a time, one minute at a time. Those with addictions to drugs and alcohol know this. But it’s no less true for the rest of us.
When we’re sure we’re doing well… that’s a trap.
Life is best lived in the humility that I simply can’t manage in my own strength to be who I want to be. But that, as St. Paul says, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Amen.
And it’s a good reminder that most of us people are hanging by a thread. Let’s be gentle.
