Have you read Justice in the Burbs by Lisa and Will Samson? I’m linking to a little promotional video about the book because I think it’s an important book for Christians, or actually for everybody.
How often do we relegate issues of justice to “other people,” or those who are “called to justice?”
We pray and pray about what God’s will in our lives is, wondering what we should do, where we should serve, what God wants us to be about. And though there are details that do need to be revealed in each person’s specific life calling, there are also callings that are just endemic to Christians. Micah 6:8 says it best, “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
I think that being “called to justice” is like being “called to breathe.” All living people share that calling. Whether we live in the ‘burbs or in the inner city. Whether we are Shane Claiborne or just ourselves.
I didn’t think so several years ago. I do now. And Lisa Samson’s work has been a catalyst in that regard.
