Easter Made Easy

Pier 1 has the solution.  “Easter Made Easy,” they yell, in storefront easter-egg-colored typeface.  As I pass by I wonder what they — of the rattan and early-ethnic vibe — have discovered.

For Easter is anything but easy.  Beyond the American chicks and eggs and cute carrots (what makes a carrot cute, by the way?), Easter is a rock-solid hard story.

For to get to Easter, we have to pass through Good Friday.  And to comprehend Easter, we have to suspend reason and the way things look and believe that there is hope beyond the obvious material world, redemption beyond the pain, reality in the cross and empty tomb.

We can do it by the grace of God, but not even Pier 1 can make it easy.
